According to the National Family Caregivers Association, more than 65 million Americans have provided care to a friend or family member in 2021.

If you're considering whether or not to have your friends or family members get paid to be your caregiver, there are a few things you'll need to consider. We will go over what you need to know about hiring a paid caregiver.

What Are the Benefits of Having a Paid Caregiver?

There are many benefits that come with having a paid caregiver, including:

  • You'll have someone who is dedicated to providing care for you or your loved one. This can give you peace of mind knowing there will always be someone there to help.

  • You can tailor the care plan to fit your specific needs. With a paid caregiver, you can decide how often they come, what tasks they do, and more if it is within your state's approved care plan.

  • Most importantly, you have the peace of mind of knowing you're getting care from someone you know and love!

How Do I Know If I Qualify for a Caregiver at No Cost to Me?

In order for your friend or family member to get paid as your caregiver, you must first qualify for Medicaid coverage. The qualifications vary from state to state, but generally, there may be age requirements, you must be disabled, or meet certain income and asset requirements. The US Department of Health and Human Services has a webpage that will tell you exactly who’s eligible for Medicaid.

What Are the Requirements for Being a Paid Caregiver?

  • You must be 18+

  • The person receiving care must be 18+

  • You may need to complete training or onboarding training depending on the state

  • You cannot be a spouse of the person you are caring for

Additional requirements may be necessary depending on where you are located. A BURD Home Health Relationship Manager can let you know all requirements/qualifications for your local area
